I have enjoyed looking at the lake of my youth. My grandad was a handyman who took care of cottages on the Packard's landing end of the lake. I spent my summer days with my friends at the castle. As an old man now, I look at the lake webcam pics every day, and actually visait the lake every year for a day. The sounds and smells never change and I can close my eyes , take deep breath and I am transported back to the 1950's for a moment. I am curious about the location of the webcam...can anyone tell me?

In reply to Janylee's note of Sept. 12th: I think you are referring to Johnny Ronco, who used to live on North St. on the way in town on the right hand side about two houses back from Park St. He used to sell worms and some hooks and small tackle from his barn. L.C. in Ct.

Thanks so much for all the news about Big John and I can see that he touched many lives. I was wondering about the guy who used to sell nightcrawlers in town. Dad and I used to get them and oh how I did not like those big worms, but I sure loved to fish and that made it all worthwhile.

Catfish Fishing comes with lessons. When I was growing up my folks would rent a cottage on Sebec Lake in Dover Foxcroft, Maine. My sister’s and I would often fish with a short fishing pole off the dock. We caught either sunfish or catfish most of the time. We would place them in our buckets for viewing and then promptly send them back home. Catfish have whiskers and to me, a little kid, I thought they were the ugliest fish I ever saw. I told myself “I will never eat a catfish.” But then I grew up. While at the local seafood market one day, the person behind the counter asked me if I would like to taste some catfish. I cringed at the thought, but then decided I would. It tasted really good. In that moment I learned a valuable lesson, you cannot “judge a fish by his whiskers.”

Big John's store- was removed along with all the buildings in the area, except the skating rink. It became the public boat launch with grass & a picnic area. I went hunting with John one fall - after being out all day,freezing- what what warmed him up, was a bit of "home brew" - it came in a jar; was clear; and burnt your tongue! But it would warm you to your toes... and John would mix it with Fresca. John was a kind, generous,& enjoyable person... missed for all the fun Big John's gave us as kids and more!! His wife couldn't make change, but she could bake pies and brownies... like crazy!

I've been going to Sebec Lake since I was, I think 10 yrs old. I am now 30. Every visit up there is an amazing one and I get so sad to leave. This year has been the hardest to leave b/c I have to go to Cali. for 8 months. I am truely missing the lake, the sunsets, the loons and just the absolute peacefulness of it. I truely hope, some day, to be able to live on the lake...year round...

When I was in Lowell last summer, they were also concerned about people swimming in the canals that used to feed the textile water powered plants. The openings that drain the water into the turbine inlets are quite powerful and will suck up a swimmer just like that at even a small depth. Don't swim by the dam. Glad to hear the report Gil, Thanks!

More info on the low water at the lake. I stopped in and talked with one of the guys working on the dam today and found that they are in the middle of major repairs to the dam following the FERC inspection last month. They have jackhammered out all the visible cracks and filled them with an epoxy. They found holes opening up under the dam and have hired a team of divers - hopefully starting next week - to pump a sealer under the dam to stop the leaks. FERC was very concerned about people jumping off the bridge being sucked into these holes under the dam, hence the "No Tresspassing" signs all over the place (which haven't won them any friends in the Village).

Of course they had to lower the water so none is going over the dam to get this work done. While this is being done, the smaller of the 2 turbines is out for overhaul. It is a four-bladed, variable pitch unit about 30" (?) in diameter. The larger turbine is 6 feet in diameter. The whole repair project will be almost $500,000. Anyone wanting more info should stop in to the dam. They welcomed me and gave me a tour which was very interesting and had never met me before.

Another reason for the low water is obvious - lack of rain. Bear Brook, Mill Brook and Clark Brook in Bowerbank are almost completely dry.

Enjoying the camp even though the fishing isn't great right now.

Sebec report late july- The water is very warm. Loon babies(by castle, bucks cove, deer point) are double in size since they hatched a few weeks ago. Salmon are biting coper mooseleuk at 2&1/2 colors trolled slow on bright days. Mosquitoes come after it rains but die as soon as it gets hot each day. The water level is low, perhaps nearly a foot. And the beaches are big! Rocks are high. The lake is incredibly clear this season as there is not much sediment. from rainfall. I had to come down to NYC for a few days for work last night, but I should be back on Sebec monday AM!

Speckled trout is a brook trout, therefore splake is a cross between brook and lake trout. Possible crosses can occur in wild, but very very rare due mainly to differences in spawning habitat (that and different genes!). I wouldn't count on seeing them in Sebec, or any other large body of water in Maine anytime soon. And if they would be introduced, they don't naturally reproduce well and would probably not generate a self sustaining population.

Salmon are native to four 'drainages' in Maine, those listed by RS as well as West Grand Lake (and any connected bodies of water in those drainages). As the most popular sportfish in Maine, any introduction that would negatively impact salmon won't legally happen, such as brown trout or rainbows. And that's a good thing, Sebec is a wonderful salmon fishing lake that should stay that way.

Hornpout are commonly known in books as brown bullhead (and maybe also the yellow bullhead). Tasty, but relatively small if you've ever caught a decent channel cat.

Tuesday July 17, 2007
09:38 PM

Back in the early days of the state of Maine there were only three lakes in the state that had Salmon in them.Sebego lake Green lake and the beautiful Sebec. In order for salmon to thrive in a body of water they need a good smelt population. When you have a good smelt run in the spring the salmon will feed well. The problem is so will the lake trout.Lake Trout have put a squeez on the Salmon .The state thought it would be a good idea to stock Sebec with Lake Trout and the trout have done well in the lake but Salmon fishing has gone down hill.Yes they are there but not as big and as plentiful as they should be.Look at what happend to the Salmon in Sebego lake the Lake trout almost took the lake over. My point is lets not think about putting Splake in sebec .Lets keep Sebec the way the Indians found it. RS.

Hi. If you were camping on Sebec Lake between 1960 and 1972 and remember the "Cloutier's" just drop on in to say hi. I have been keeping my mom dad abreast of all the news and dad just loves the webcam pictures. We rented a cottage from Esther Adams for two weeks every summer and it was to the left of the Gammons, a brick red cottage. There were catfish there then and it sounds as though they are still around. Happy Catfish and Hornpout fishing to all you fishermen:) My favorite is a landlocked salmon despite the bones. And as far as a "Splake" I haven't a clue... (Catfish author)

Thursday July 12, 2007
10:48 AM

I was checking to see if I could find records of splake stocking in Sebec. That was when I discovered my mistake. A splake is cross between a SPeckled trout and a LAKE trout. I'm getting old and my memory is failing me ;)

Anyway here is a link to all you may care to know about splake:

http://www.maine.gov/ifw/fishing/fishidentification/splake.htm

BTW, as far as I could tell by stocking records, splake have not been stocked in Sebec Lake.

Back in the 1960's when the limit on salmon & trout was 15 fish or 7 1/2 lbs a day (i.e. the good ol' days)it wasn't all that uncommon to catch a nice brook trout while trolling for salmon with spinners and night crawlers in the narrows. I haven't caught one in Sebec for years. I'd love to see a Splake population introduced as they are a lot of fun to catch. I think they put up as much or more fight than a brookie and they are just as tasty. -gil-

Yes, a hornpout is one of the many species of catfish. It is on the small end of the size scale for catfish and is common in the eastern US.

Dace is a family of fish. the longnose dace is sometimes refered to as a sucker. Most of the other dace species have 'normal' heads/mouths.

so . . . a hornpout is a catfish?

What is a dace or sucker as we sometimes call them?

Thursday July 12, 2007
07:28 AM

I worked a summer co-op with the ME Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. I remember that splake (a cross between a salmon and a lake trout) were originally bred and introduced to certain bodies of water as a sport fish. The problem is that fishermen over the years have (illegally) introduced species of fish into their favorite lakes and streams which can really upset the balance of things. For example the bass family of fish are much more aggressive 'hunters' than the salmonids (salmon and trout) and can slowly drive the salmonids out by beating them to the food. Luckily the deep water helps maintain the balance in lakes like Sebec. So, even if splake were never originally found in Sebec, they could be there now. As to the catfish/hornpout, I remember catching one near the shore when I was a young boy. I remember it as HUGE. But, as we all know, everything seems big through a childs eyes. So they are in Sebec - and so are eels! -Northshore Exile

Second Loon Update:

I just got back from fishing in Bucks cove and the loon there is still on the nest on House Island BUT, as I returned to my dock this AM our loon has just had 2 chicks! Mom and dad are teaching them how to swim and get on their backs out front as I type. I hear their calls to each other this quiet morning.

Loon report UPDATE & ice cave info:

Bucks cove loon was off the nest - havn't spotted chicks

Loon at packards still on the nest - husband is getting noisy and anxious - is this a second nesting? how long does it take.

Stop and ask permission for right of way, where to land your boat, and inform of your hiking intentions at the 1st house on the left on RT150 at 995 Sebec Lake road. On another note, would someone be able to give me a price on renting a cottage on Sebec Lake for a weekend and also the price for a week, for this time of year? I might like to give my folks a little vacation and bring back some memories for them, having spent time there over the years.

Sebec report:

It is cold here. Water is warmer than the air. The bass are now on post spawn patern. The sunfish are taking over the bass spawn beds. When you find them, the bass ae taking senkos like crazy but down deep. Cars are finally filling up the parking lots, most restaurants have been empty, but that will change now for the next 2 months.

Loons: 2 loons are still on the nest. Let all know to leave no boat wake. One pair is in bucks cove on NE side of House Island right in the middle on the shore. The other is on the way into poacher's camp by my camp at Packard's. We should see chicks any day now. I hope the eagles are well fed. We have several nesting Bald Eagle pairs.

Well I got to go split some more wood for the fire in my camp's woodstove this July 1st.

Catfish

Fishing comes with lessons. I told myself “I will never eat a catfish.” But then I grew up.While at the local seafood market one day, the person behind the counter asked me if I would like to taste some catfish. I cringed at the thought, but then decided I would. It tasted really good. In that moment I learned a valuable lesson, you cannot “judge a fish by his whiskers.” by Janylee McGlinchy (Cloutier) JMcGlinc@fau.edu

It is part of me and always will be, someday I hope to return. So all of you that still get to be at Sebec, "Count your Blessings" because you still get to be there instead of some concrete jungle. I was inspired to sign in after reading the entire guestbook. You people don't know how lucky you are. Quityerbitchen. Mr. McCormack you make my day every day with this great website. Best luck was on the sutton spoon.Best fish was a male salmon 24 inches. Can not remember what he hit on ?.Good luck out there try any thing you have in your tackle box. This time of year they will hit most any thing. The key to catching fish on Sebec is to get out there and fish.Good luck be safe. RS.

I've been away from the site for a while and am just catching up. Many years ago I worked at Brown's mill in Dover maintaining the generating plant there. We had to maintain a level in the river for sewage purposes. That means repairing the flashboards anually. I have the greatest respect for anyone willing to walk out on that dam while water is flowing over the top. I saw that happen this year in the village. Kudos to the team responsible. bsbwbk

Ken I am no Pro, however this time of year big touge and salmon are more active than later in summer.More importantly they have yet to go deep to cold water. As a novice you can use anything trole with a "mooselook" spoon or or even a count down "rapala" this early. If you can work the depth at 15' or so, anything could happen. Most people use live or frozen bait, I have not yet too much of a P.I.T.A. Others I hope, can help in more detail. Everyone is still learning at some level right. Best of luck to you!

I did'nt put my boat in this week end just becouse of what you say " low water " I chose not to partake in the fiasco at the ramp. The last few years have been difficult with this dam issue. The loons will loose the first nest now, when the water comes up. I've seen this happen before. They could nest again, it's not yet to late. Gotch yer back May 30 10:00 a.m.

Thank You Mike! that new video of the 29th is great. You can use the play/pause button to stop it at points when boats go buy...lots of boat activity for a weekday...very nice..can't wait to get up again this weekend..HOPE THE BLACK FLIES GO AWAY SOON...boy they were pesty memorial day weekend.

Wednesday May 30, 2007
10:00 AM

The water level was low enough 2 weeks ago to get the boards in and they missed that opportunity, then of course it rained again. If you saw the fiasco with people trying to use the boat ramps maybe you wouldn't be so quick to just shut up and take it.This was an important weekend for area business's. People who planned to spend the day on the lake and had to go elsewhere probably aren't coming back and it was, I believe, preventable.I do wish to thank the people who gave up their holiday to get the boards in for us.My issue is with management.I'll shut the #^&* up now.

Thanks for filling us in on the splash board process, Gil. Saw them starting in on the boards Saturday afternoon. I guess it's easy to gripe about the levels, but it can't be too easy standing on that concrete with water flowing by, trying to install wooden boards! That, and trying to MAINTAIN the levels, since Sebec is a conduit for a pretty massive drainage basin. I'm with Gil--thanks for getting our lake level up, gents! Big Y

There are a series of heavy metal rods about 18"-24" long set into the concrete top of the dam that the splash boards are attached to. During the winter, many (most?) of these were bent over horizontally, maybe by ice going over the dam. With the volume flowing over the dam all spring, it would have been difficult - if not impossible - to get out onto the dam and work. I have nothing to do with the dam or its operation but I assume they had to keep the gates open until the water was low enough to get out on it safely and straighten or replace the rods, then build the splash boards. When I looked at the dam Thursday, I thought it would still be a few days until the water had dropped enough to work. Sunday, when the guys were out there working, the northerly end of the dam was dry but the center section still had a few inches of water flowing over the top.

The fact that they were working on Sunday on Memorial Day week end seems to tell me that someone takes the lake water level seriously and is doing what they can to get the water back up where we all hope it will be all summer. Good job guys.

08:00 PM

The Swift River guys have to wait for the lake level to get to 320.5 feet (above sea-level) before they can access the top of the spillway to replace the flashboards; per the 7:31 PM 5/27 message below that was accomplished on Sunday (5/27). One can, in fact, see the evidence of that event in the change in flow rate, by about 1000 cubic feet per second, in the Piscataquis River observed at Medford (http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?01034000) as a consequence of the flow rate (1000 cfs) it is not getting from Sebec Lake. Assuming no rain in the next ten days or so, a fairly constant 1000 cfs rate means that our lake will reach its "high" summer target of 322.8 feet in about eight days. If rain does occur, it will lead to the bitter/sweet early arrival of the lake level at its targeted point. RBH

Follow up on the Sebec shore road condition, the biggest wash outs were filled in with private equipment from Tim's cove road Good of him to do this work! no body asked him or them to do it. Should I say who it is or should keep it quiet. credit when credit is due I say. Some say it's a fast boat...moored at a bright colored camp, who's to say , but I'll bet it is. You all have a nice week end, Enjoy! "Moth balls"

04:08 PM

I love it, ice just out, Memorial Day this weekend, and I'm gonna rush to give my guess on ICE IN!...heh, heh, heh,......aint right is it?

But, I spend Thanksgiving into Mill Brook Pond each year, and almost always that pond is open when we go into camp, and froze up good when we leave. So here's a stab...I'll say you will be able to slap a hockey puck from Peaks Kenney to Bowerbank on December 20, 2007, 1st thing in the am, unless there's too much snow.....then you'll need to send the neighbors barking dog across with it in his mouth..

Hello to everyone who can view this web site what a wonderful day it is. I am here at Sebec Lake in Tims Cove glad it is early in the year and enjoying the peace and quiet of a rainy Sunday. Glad it is early in the season and not many people up here yet. I am so enjoying the loons and peepers at night. Very few lights up and down the shore at night. Soon the hustle and bustle of summer will be here, while that is a great time of year it just cannot compare with spring or the last days of fall.

Fuel costs for the fountain 47' could go as follows, Just say you wanted to spend a nice 4hrs out on the lake, 2hrs. at cruise and 2hrs. full throttle perhaps waterskiing at 88 m.p.h. Est. fuel cost at a modest $3.50 per. gal. $1,512.00 Then add in for broken tow ropes and the trip the the Mayo Hospital, nice! Big lake Jake

My dock is in, it snowed and was only 32 degrees the other day in Greenville, no blackflies yet, and the leaves are just emerging. I just got to check the weather next week to see if next weekend's weather is worth the trip to open camp. Now where did I leave that copper mooselook!

Okay, the water's hooked up, the dock's not quite ready to go in, but I'm SO looking forward to swatting black flies, hearing the roar of powerboats, the whine of jet skis, the laughter of kids on tubes, the occasional nightine party across the lake, the calls of the loons, and all the other sights, sounds, and smells of the premier lake in the state of Maine. We're awfully lucky to have a piece of this place... Big Y

BLK, I don't think it was LBG who was the ranter. The ranter signed himself "guess who" and couldn't spell for sh*t. LBG by all accounts is a nice guy. I certainly don't begrudge him his boat, even though I'm only there to hear it occassionally :( I'd rather be there to hear it every day, but that's my "when I win the lottery" dream. Regarding Packards, yes, those were the good ole' days. What I wouldn't give to have those summers back. One of my best memories of Burt Packard was the look on his face when I told him that my grandmother told me to tell him that $5 was not enough to pay me for cleaning camps all day. My gram could hold her own with him and he knew it. He peeled another $5 off his stack and handed it to me without a word.

Hello "Loud boat guy" how did I get involved in your rant of Tues May 15th at 9:49 a.m.? I'm not the guy who started asking who had a "Loud cigar boat" entered on Fri. April 27th. 11:17 a.m. I did however comment on April 27th at 5:55p.m. I belive, I said not a real fan of this kind of boat on such a small lake, opinion only. You will continue to enjoy your self as you wish. No body ever asked you to stop. You do... bring a lot of attetion to yourself, shall I make a list? People will notice and comment, that's all. Suck it up, it's what you love, to be noticed, No big deal. We all have our thing. Lets move on and enjoy the lake we share together. Big lake Jake

Wednesday May 16, 2007
07:04 PM

YES Diane, as a kid We drove up from the lower lake. with whole family, cousens, aunts & uncle, grandparents, No lie 16 or more people in two boats. we would all go to Packard's for breakfast and/or "suppah". What a great place, squeeky old wood floors, trophy togue on the walls perhaps other game as well. For a place in the woods, the table presentation was fancy, formal place "settins" with iced "buttah" pats in a dish, whole milk in a "pichah". Food, to be honest was... not the whole point. Pulling up to the dock to be greeted by Burt who secured the boat, listening to the heavy "Maine twang" and it was a real one, Filling up with gas while there. enjoying real local flavor was more what I remember as special. I wish it was still open... Ahhh that would be nostalgic and fun to somehow go back to that time, to the warm "summah" evenings that are long past yet still retrievable in our memories. For me this was the mid 1960s to early 1970s. Thanks Diane for bringing it all back. Big lake Jake.

I saw an awesome PBS show on loons, mercury, and acid rain. Facinating info, some new to me and other confirming what I knew. I was glad to see the map of bad places in New England with the bad mercury problems were not in the Sebec water shed. Moose River and Jackman looked bad however. Other lakes to the southwest of us too. I came in the middle of it so I will have to figure out what it was titled. Has any one seen this show? The biologists catch the loons at night with flashlights and nets. The Loons are lured by playing loon calls on a boombox in the dark! The loon closeups are amazing. GW

HELLO MIKE, it's not officially ice out until you can navigate from one end to the other...see my notes about today just below...sorry no ice out on the 5th...the way things are looking, might be no winner at all.

Just in, the lake as of about 7:30 A.M. this morning not passable through the big lake to the lower lake ICE from about grapevine on as far as the eye could see more than a half mile of ice. I attempted it in a boat, no go. Some ice noted to be about a foot thick. KJ TC187

AH, You are aware of Maine's "headway speed" law, right? Within 200 feet of any shoreline, you need to slow down to headway speed only. Probably that's what the folks you talked with were upset about.

I went up to Ship Pond Stream falls on my SeaDoo a couple of years ago and took a picture of the falls at high water. Bill had it up on his web site for a while. Even at headway speed I bounced off a few rocks. Wouldn't want to do it again.

Annual ice out wilson falls jetski run report:

Well this year's trip up to wilson falls was somewhat of a dissapointment. I got up the first fall OK on only my second attempt. ( I didn't give myself enough distance the first time to build up speed) Next I went up to the second fall but while i was surveying my next route some people waved me over to the bank. They told me they didn't like jet skis too much, especially up on the river and falls! They told me it was wrong! Then they asked me to leave right away and never come back! I tried to explain I was on my annual trip but they were pretty insistent and mad and I felt threatened.

As I was running away down the falls I hit a big rock and now have another hole in my jetski. And I never saw a single loon - but I did hear one!

Has anyone ever jetskied up ship pond falls?

Hi,

Outcast Bass Club has a tournament on Sebec Lake today and the ice was down around Greeley's Landing. We still went out. The ice was thin enough for the boats to get out through. There also was a little ice in a few of the small coves but not much. Thought that you would like to know about this.

Schoodic Lake George,

Thanks for sharing Joline's links. Those photos are great! They would be great in a coffee table book.

Feel free to explore any of the photos/links at our website.

BTW.. Any of the photos of togue in any of my links were most definitely not caught in Schoodic. I did catch a sunfish once on Schoodic.

Hey PA Dave - we're between Berry cove and Knight's Landing, but much closer to the cove. Our view towards Lakeview is a lot like the view on the webcam here. I wish we had a first class webcam like this on Schoodic! I might look into it over the summer, or more likely the fall when I will have more uninterrupted time. In the meantime, have you seen the fantastic work by "Joline", aka smallwon on community webshots? I don't know who she is, but click here for a great slide show of Schoodic shots:

http://outdoors.webshots.com/slideshow/270668189qjSwhH

and http://community.webshots.com/user/smallwon

for lots more. She has 4 albums I think, Seasons of Schoodic, Schoodic 2003, Schoodic 04, and Schoodic Lake. Excellent work Sebecians will like as well. Along with the webcam, it helps calm my lake camp withdrawl outbreaks which are getting much worse after seeing the May 4 ice out movie. There has to be excitement in the spring air that we're missing out on doing our jobs!

They're good shots to fwd to your friends too so they can see why you drive 600 miles. I'm hoping Joline will make a coffee table book, but I also really don't want the lake to be "discovered".

And don't feel bad, nobody ever catches anything bigger than a skinny minnow at the ice fishing derby either. (No fish in Schoodic. No fish in Schoodic...)

Can someone please fly an airplane over the lake and take a picture of the lake? Then we can see the state of ice-out overall.

I must agree with my neighbor "Schoodic Lake George". There are no fish to be found in Schoodic. All those stories about large Togue and Bass are just rumors. Heck, the only thing I caught during the ice derby this year was one of those pesky landlocked.

BTW George, our camp is located in Chase Cove.

GW - the fishing at Schoodic is terrible. Go somewhere else and leave our poor scrawny Togue and Bass alone. No fish at Schoodic - pass the word! I'm sure the fellow from PA will agree.

Check out Myfishfinder.com for a good BB on fishing. A sister site for them is Iceshanty.com for ice fishing info. As the previous writer commented, there was a lot of action to be had on Schoodic this past winter.

GW-

How does the fishing on Schoodic compare? Better! (open to debate, I guess...) There are a few active fishing website BB that discuss fishing (and weather) in Maine. For more info do a quick google search, you'll find the active sites quickly. It was one of the hottest spots this past winter; I'm sure it will produce open water as well.

Time to get excited - there is a large (20-30 foot) crack beginning at Clark Cove and running across the entire lake. That means the lake should clear out tonight from Ram Island to the village. The breezes will do the rest.

On another note: My family has resided here in Maine since the early 1700's. We have always enjoyed folks coming to visit and will look forward to them again this summer. bsbwrbk

Hey now "Schoodic Lake" George :

How is the fishing on Schoodic? Are there any smallmouth/Togue/Salmon? I usually go a little farther to the river or southbranch for bass but I've wanted to try Schoodic. How does it compare with it's neighbor lakesfor fishing.

Great ice moving video! And today's morning shot is absolutely beautiful. And the waterfowl in the picture looks pretty look-like to me. I can't wait to get back to Schoodic Lake at the end of the month to open my camp. I just turned on my a/c for the hot day today here in FL. These are two totally different summers.

I want to send a public and hearty thank you for this website. We don't have anything this fancy or high tech on Schoodic Lake, so I appreciate being able to keep an eye on sister lake Sebec. Thanks again for your super site and letting me feel not so far from home!

The Ice will wait until tomorrow to go out - MY DAY - I feel it. Getting the old jetski out of the shed today. My wilson falls annual ice out run will be especially great if I also win the iceout contest on the same day. I might even remove my jetski muffler for the event.

The Moosehead Lake webcam shows a lot of ice on the lake. Generally ice out up to Moosehead is 10 to 14 days after Sebec. Looking off to the Narrows this morning from Shore Road South, I noticed white caps from the gusty winds coming off the big lake

Hey Iceout Observers, it looks to me like the 'flag' has perhaps toppled over?! Is it still there? I can't quite tell...

Thursday May 03, 2007
10:25 AM

Still looks like a lot of ice until "open navigation from one end of lake to the other." Anyone know if Rangeley or Moosehead (traditionally later than Sebec) are open yet? I know a lot of those late storms had the rain/snow line split the state and I wonder if the snow significantly helped insulate the ice.

Come on May 6!

Those that have problem with the noise of summer need to find a way to get up to the lake during any other time of year. It is so peaceful and tranquil this time of year and in the Fall. Face it, we humans make noise.... but its the noise of people having a great time at a great place. With that noise comes swimming, fishing, boating, campfire get togethers, ect... I have to admit, at the end of Summer I look forward to things quieting down again but its after I have enjoyed a Summer experiencing and watching everybody else out there making the most of there time at the Lake. By The way, I have been hearing the loons calling for the past week now... sweet

It's topics and comments like the ones below that make me feel ashamed to call myself a Mainer. Boat or no-boat, jet ski or no-jet ski, local or from away. If we're on the lake sure enough we paid tax's to be there. Living all but a few weeks a year in southern Maine, were the lakes are so crowded that I refuse to go boating during the weekend in fear that I might be killed. The slightly louder or faster or occasional jet ski that we see on Sebec should be the last thing to complain about.

Keep the waters clean, the rod tips bent and the net handy PR-(Dover Dozen)

Re: logging roads north of Sebec. I took the new road across from the Bowerbank Fire station 2 summers ago and followed it in a westerly direction to the end - about 9 miles if I remember correctly. My GPS said I was near the western end of Buttermilk and yes, it passes pretty close to Grapevine. I came back to the Mill Brook Road, turned north and eventually came out on the sharp turn in Barnard. Hard telling how many new roads have been built since then. Gil

Although we are new on the block we enjoy our cabin on Shore Road North, the noise is not as bad as Rt.295 in Cumberland even if we hear a loud boat once in awhile its better than twenty four hours a day. But yes the quiet and the people we have ment up here are Great,my wife and I can't wait to get back this week end.

Does anyone know how to access the logging road north of sebec that cuts over the sebec/buttermilk trail? I understand that the road emerges from the woods in Bowerbank or near Sebec Village. It probably runs the grapevine ridge too.

I feel we have had enough talk of the boat. The folks that own the loud boat take the boat for an hour or so on the weekend. They are hard working and enjoy the lake as much as we do. Yes I agree that the camps need to be opened because apparently the owners have to much time on their hands. There are things on the lake that irks me also but everyone has the right to enjoy the water, their camps and loud toys. I think we should leave others alone and we should be enjoying the things that we have been blessed with. Again how many times do you really hear this boat during a week, once? How many times do you listen/see other annoying things? Lights, power tools, planes, jet skis, fun loving singers at all hours of the day and night. We all have our own annoyances so, Stop Your Silly Stuff, Open your camps and lets have FUN. Personally I can't wait to hear the roar of that loud boat. I would love to take a cruise in that bad boy/gal boat myself!!! Come on ice out. TC resident

Sorry, but I have to agree with those who would rather enjoy the beauty that is Sebec without the sound of boats drowning out the peace and quiet. What I don't understand is why anyone needs to go that fast on the lake anyway. Take some time and enjoy it! And regarding the comment about canoes vs. loud boats: my canoe isn't bothering anyone else, that's the difference. -Diane
